What is
flexibility
Fluctuations in grid capacity and peak demand can create opportunities to manage your energy use more intelligently. We help you optimise your consumption, leverage flexibility, and create additional value through smart, data-driven energy management.
What is flexibility and how does it work?
Flexibility is the ability to respond to changes in the energy grid and market prices by adjusting when and how energy is consumed, stored, or supplied. As electrification and renewable energy increase, supply and demand are less naturally aligned, leading to periods of surplus and scarcity.
We intelligently control energy storage, such as batteries, based on market prices and grid conditions. This ensures energy is stored or used at the right time. It helps optimise costs and leverage flexibility where it creates value. Flexibility turns energy from a fixed cost into an actively managed part of your operations.
Why flexibility is essential in today’s energy system
The energy transition is accelerating, and the generation of renewable energy is growing rapidly. However, the grid infrastructure cannot always keep pace with this development. In certain regions and at specific times, this leads to pressure on the electricity grid, which can result in limitations on feed-in capacity or delays in new connections.
At the same time, the increasing share of renewable energy is driving greater price volatility in energy markets. Weather-dependent generation and ongoing electrification mean that supply and demand are becoming less predictable and fluctuate more than in the past.
For producers and prosumers, this creates a new reality. Simply having generation capacity is no longer sufficient. The real value increasingly lies in how flexible and controllable energy can be deployed.
Virtual Power Plant
Scholt Energy connects these assets to the relevant energy markets through its Virtual Power Plant (VPP). This allows producers to:
- Monetise flexibility instead of losing revenue
- Access markets that are otherwise unavailable to individual assets
- Reduce exposure to congestion-related restrictions
The result is a new layer of revenue on top of existing production income.
Flexibility for prosumers
We integrate production, storage and consumption into one coordinated strategy. Flexibility becomes part of a broader energy optimisation approach, not a standalone add-on.
Align generation and consumption more efficiently to avoid peak grid fees
Use batteries and charging infrastructure as active system assets
Generate revenue without affecting core operations
“Flexibility is not a technical feature.
It is a strategic capability that allows companies to participate actively in the future energy system."
How to create revenue from flexibility?
When renewable assets actively support the grid, they create clear value for the energy system. This value is compensated through various energy markets. For solar and battery assets, flexibility can also be monetised by optimising the timing of feed-in and participating in energy trading. Through our Virtual Power Plant, we aggregate flexible assets and manage all interactions with energy markets.
This includes forecasting market conditions, deciding when assets are activated, trading energy, handling settlement, and providing clear reporting, supported by powerful algorithms. Asset owners do not need to monitor the markets themselves or make operational decisions in real time.
